This album only has four songs, each of which longer than seven minutes. While this might deter others from listening to it, I quite appreciate it since I get "more song per song". I also really enjoy that each track has a unique identity and isn't just a bit of text slapped onto one singular riff.
My favourite track has to be Apathetic Tongues or Shallow Graves, especially since they also frequently get played live. The opening track, The Third Door, would be a highlight too if the other two didn't beat it. It is, in my opinion, more enjoyable to listen to than most metal albums are.
Furthermore, you can really feel the collaboration on this one, as the debut album and later released self-titled EP have a bit of a different vibe. Talking about those, the sound quality on this CD is amazing in comparison and blows most black metal out of the water. While some people might argue it's part of the genre, and for some classic albums definitely benefit from it, I usually don't like the low fidelity present in black metal.
Now, the title track, Mortal Coil hasn't seen much love in this review yet, but it still deserves a part in the spotlight. This album features four of my favourite tracks of all time, so it feels like whatever track is my least favourite is left behind.
All in all, this is probably one of the best albums ever written. At least in my opinion.
If you like heavier music in any way, go listen to it.
